Patriots 2014 opponents set

December 25, 2013

With the AFC East clinched (again) for the Patriots, we now know what the schedule (opponents-wise anyway) will look like in 2014.  From the NFC, it’s the NFC North, but don’t worry, no Patriots on Thanksgiving since the Lions come to Foxboro.  It’ll be either the Dolphins or Bills in Pontiac since it’s CBS’s turn for that game (unless something changes).   You can probably pencil that Pats/Packers in for SNF though.

Clearing the Deck – NFL Week 13

December 1, 2013

Clearing the deck for week 13 of the regular season around the NFL…

* Can you really blame the Patriots for a 1st half letdown against the 2-9 Texans? Thankfully for New England, the Pats rebounded in time to make it the 2-10 Texans.

* Keep those Cam Newton for MVP buttons as the Panthers roll over the Bucs and now face New Orleans two of the next three weeks.

* Don’t look now, but the Jaguars are now winners of 3 after upsetting the Browns.

* Speaking of the Browns, how about Josh Gordon?!! Dude became the first person in NFL history to have back-to-back 200+ yard receiving weeks, posting 261 Sunday before a head injury after whipping the Stelers for 237 last Sunday.

* The Bears just can’t stand prosperity.  They’ll be happy to get Jay Cutler back next week after an OT loss in Minnesota.

* Is that the Fat Lady we’re heading for head coach Rex Ryan and Geno Smith?

* The 49ers are back on track.  Watch out NFC!

* Sorry Canada, but the Falcons, Bills was the best the NFL could give ya. At least you got overtime!

* Don’t blame Alex Smith for the Chiefs 2nd loss to the Broncos in 3 weeks. Peyton Manning 5 TD’s – 4 to Eric Decker.  Hello, KC defense!

* Start penciling in the Colts and Bengals for playoff home games the first weekend in January.

* Wouldn’t mind seeing the Cardinals and Eagles again come playoff time.  That’s the game we should’ve seen on SNF (sorry Giants/Redskins).

NFL Week 10 Picks

November 7, 2013

Redskins at Vikings (Thursday 8:25pm)
In a vacuum, not a bad Thursday night game. This could be RGIII’s coming out party for 2013.
Winner: Redskins

Seahawks at Falcons (Sunday 1pm)
There’s something not right with Seattle, but they’re still more than good enough to beat this Falcons team.
Winner: Seahawks

Bengals at Ravens (Sunday 1pm)
If the Bengals are for real, they right the ship and put last Thursday’s bad loss in Miami behind them. Quickly.
Winner: Bengals

Lions at Bears (Sunday 1pm)
Jay Cutler is back for the Bears, which is bad news for the Lions, who – like the Bears – try to distance themselves from the now Aaron Rodgers-less Packers.
Winner: Bears

Eagles at Packers (Sunday 1pm)
Philly is 4-1 on the road this year. Don’t be surprised if they give Green Bay back-to-back home losses.
Winner: Eagles

Rams at Colts (Sunday 1pm)
This will be tougher than you think for the Colts.
Winner: Colts

Raiders at Giants (Sunday 1pm)
The road to .500 continues in NY/NJ.
Winner: Giants

Bills at Steelers (Sunday 1pm)
Can the Steelers really be this bad? EJ Manuel returns for Buffalo.
Winner: Bills

Jaguars at Titans (Sunday 1pm)
The Jaguars are still the best….at being the worst.
Winner: Titans

Panthers at 49ers (Sunday 4pm)
NFC Playoff Preview? The Panthers are better, but not ready for primetime just yet.
Winner: 49ers

Texans at Cardinals (Sunday 4:25pm)
Amazingly, this game means more to the Cardinals in terms of playoffs than the Texans.
Winner: Cardinals

Broncos at Chargers (Sunday 4:25pm)
Shootout at the Q. Do you think former Broncos coach/current Chargers head coach Mike McCoy will have a few tricks up his sleeve for his former team?
Winner: Chargers

Cowboys at Saints (Sunday 8:30pm)
Rob Ryan will be laughing at the end of this one with a little revenge on the team that fired him at the end of last season.
Winner: Saints

Dolphins at Bucs (Sunday 8:40pm)
With everything that’s been going on with the alleged bullying case in Miami, the Dolphins seem to be two things: Unified and angry.  That’ll be just enough against the winless Bucs.
Winner: Dolphins

Last week: 7-6
Season: 91-42

Clearing the Deck – NFL Week 9

November 3, 2013

Clearing the deck for week 9 of the NFL season…

* Welcome back Tom Brady! 432 yards and 4 TD’s vs. Pittsburgh Sunday is something fantasy football and Patriots fans are more used to from TB12.

* Can you believe the Browns (4-5) have more wins than the defending Super Bowl Champion Ravens (3-5)? They do now after beating Baltimore Sunday.

* Hey Cowboys, be thankful you were playing the Vikings this week.

* Darnell Young saves the Redskins season with an unlikely 3-TD day in washington’s OT win over the Chargers.

* If only the Bills had a QB, there’d be no more undefeated teams left.  That having been said, KC continues to be lucky each week. That luck stops as Denver and San Diego are up next on the schedule.

* Give Cam Newton his props, he’s got the Panthers back in playoff contention.

* Sorry Jeff Fisher, you can’t go home again (or at least you can’t be them in your home).

* How are Rex Ryan’s Jets 5-4? This week’s victim: Rob Ryan’s Saints.

* Have a season in one day Nick Foles – 7 TD’s – tying an NFL record with Peyton Manning and 5 others!!!!

* To say the Seahawks dodged a bullet would be an understatement.  Down 21-0 to winless Tampa Bay, they survive in OT, 27-24.

NFL Picks – Week 7

October 17, 2013

Seahawks at Cardinals (Thursday 8:25pm)
Trap game for Seattle as they start a two-game road trip through Arizona and St.Louis?
Winner: Seahawks

Patriots at Jets (Sunday 1pm)
Is there anyone left to play for the Patriots? No Wilfork, Mayo. Maybe no Amendola, Talib, Kelly…etc.  But, will it matter?
Winner: Patriots

Bills at Dolphins (Sunday 1pm)
It’s only week 7, but a must win game for the Dolphins if they’re to remain playoff contenders in the AFC.
Winner: Dolphins

Buccaneers at Falcons (Sunday 1pm)
Label this one the Disappointment Bowl.
Winner: Falcons

Bears at Redskins (Sunday 1pm)
Wouldn’t Jay Cutler just love to stick another “L” next to Mike Shanahan’s name this week?
Winner: Bears

Cowboys at Eagles (Sunday 1pm)
Sadly enough, this is a battle for the top spot in the NFC East even though neither team is over .500.
Winner: Eagles

Chargers at Jaguars (Sunday 1pm)
This is San Diego’s third trip cross country in just six weeks.
Winner: Chargers

Rams at Panthers (Sunday 1pm)
Will the real Rams and Panthers please stand up? Who saw St.Louis routing the Texans in Houston? Or who saw a 4 TD week from Cam Newton on the road in Minnesota?
Winner: Panthers

Bengals at Lions (Sunday 1pm)
Both teams are 4-2, but you just get the sense that the Bengals continue to be underachievers.
Winner: Lions

49ers at Titans (Sunday 4pm)
You’d like to see this matchup in about four weeks when Titans QB Jake Locker returns from injury. UPDATE: Titans announce that Locker will surprisingly start Sunday.
Winner: 49ers

Texans at Chiefs (Sunday 4:25pm)
Talk about the ultimate two teams going in different directions! Step for Houston: try to end their five game streak of giving up pick-6’s.
Winner: Chiefs

Ravens at Steelers (Sunday 4:25pm)
This used to be a marquee matchup.
Winner: Steelers

Browns at Packers (Sunday 4:25pm)
Green Bay’s defense surprisingly got better without Clay Matthews last week in Baltimore. Anamoly or the real deal?
Winner: Packers

Broncos at Colts (Sunday 8:30pm)
A return to Peyton’s Place for Manning.  Don’t let the homecoming fool you.  Manning will be all gameface by 8:30pm.
Winner: Broncos

Vikings at Giants (Sunday 8:40pm)
Josh Freeman gets his first start at QB for Minnesota.
Winner: Giants

Last week: 12-3
Season: 64-28

Clearing the Deck – NFL Week 3

September 22, 2013

Clearing the deck for NFL Week 3…

* Has the Patriots offense figured it out? Brady to Thompkins for 2 TD’s in 23-3 win over the Bucs.

* It really is that simple Cowboys – run the ball and things are much easier.  Just ask DeMarco Murray (175 rush yards) and Tony Romo (3 TD’s).

* So which Houston Texans team is for real? The team that’s fallen behind in every game so far this season or the team that’s played well in 2 fourth quarter wins?

* Maybe the Browns know something the rest of us do not – Brian Hoyer throws 3 TD’s and engineers a come from behind victory over the Vikings.

* Welcome to the sophomore slump RGIII.  That’s 0-3 for Mr. DC.

* Beware the New Orleans Saints. Brees and Co. are rolling early in the Big Easy at 3-0.

* Ugh if you’re a Giants fan. 0-3 and shutout 38-0 at Carolina. Now, that’s a bad way to start your week.

* It wasn’t pretty, but the Bengals will take the roller coaster win over Green Bay (up 14, down 16, up 4).

* Didn’t take long for Trent Richardson to make an impact in Indy! Who saw that thrashing of the 49ers coming?

* These may not be your same ol’ Dolphins, folks! Games against the Falcons, down by 3 late in the fourth quarter Sunday, are ones they usually lose in September.

* Boy is Jacksonville bad!

NFL Wild Card Playoff Picks

January 4, 2013

Bengals at Texans (Saturday 4:30pm)
It’s a rematch of last year’s AFC Wild Card game. Same day. Same time. Same result (barely). Popular pick says Cincy here and you know what that means.
Winner: Texans

Vikings at Packers (Saturday 8pm)
Adrian Peterson has run for over 400 yards (409 to be exact) against the Packers in two games this season. He might need to rush for 300 more to keep Minnesota alive with the Packers WR corps the healthiest they’ve been all season.
Winner: Packers

Colts at Ravens (Sunday 1pm)
This is not your father’s Ravens defense, even with Ray Lewis back on his retirement tour. But, can Andrew Luck win the turnover battle in his first playoff game (17 turnovers on the road)?
Winner: Ravens

Seahawks at Redskins (Sunday 4:30pm)
Toughest game of the weekend to pick. Seattle gets Brandon Browner back in the secondary after his four game suspension. Plainly put: Seattle’s defense is MUCH better than Washington’s.
Winner: Seahawks

Last week: 14-2
Season: 171-84-1
