Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, ShaquilleO’Neal and Kenny Smith

Barkley comments on Miami Heat forward LeBron James: “I’ve watched him playwithout Dwyane Wade and he’s a totally different player. I’m goingto challenge him to play like that all the time. He’s the best player inthe world but for some reason, when Dwyane is on the court, he takes a backseat.”

O’Neal comments on LeBron Jamesdoing the right thing by deferring to Dwyane Wade: “We are very hard on LeBron butwe have to remember that he is a pass-first player. Guys like Dwyane Wade and Kobe (Bryant) are scorersfirst. What you call deferring to D-Wade, I say that’s the right thingbecause he’s always been a pass-first guy.”

Barkley: “He is a pass-firstplayer…but it’s not working. If something isn’t working,it’s stupid to keep doing the same thing over and over. It makes (James)passive and when the game is on the line in the fourth quarter, he turns it onand tries too hard.  He’s got to take over this team.”

O’Neal comments on how hehandled his relationship with Dwyane Wade when they played together 2004-08: “What I did (when I joined theHeat) was psychological because I told D-Wade it was his team because I was onmy way down. I didn’t want to have the same problems that I had withPenny (Hardaway) and Kobe(Bryant). I said this is D-Wade’s team, just make sure I get my touchesand let me do my thing. We had a great relationship.”

Game 1:  Los Angeles Lakers (87) @ Miami Heat (98)

Announcers: Marv Albert (play-by-play) and Steve Kerr (analyst) withCraig Sager (reporter)

Kerr comments on Heatcenter Eddy Curry, who played in his first game since December 17, 2009:“He’s an incredible offensive force when he gets the ball down nearthe hoop, that’s why the Knicks gave him a huge contract. When he isright offensively, he is really tough to stop.”

Kerr comments on the Heatbeing able to offset their lack of depth: “The Heat arenot that deep of a team but the ability of LeBron and Wade to take over gameson their own allows Miamito offset various loses throughout the lineup.”

Kerr comments on theLakers offensive struggles: “The Lakers don’t haveenough ways to score. Their three-point shooting is bad and theydon’t force turnovers so they get bogged down. They can getugly.”

Kerr comments on the Heat: “When youturn the ball over against Miami,it’s going to be a dunk or layup on the other end.”

Kerr comments on the Heat’simprovement from last season: “I’m impressed with Miami’sexecution. They’ve gotten a lot better since last year, particularlyin late game situations. They’ve figured some things out and LeBron andD-Wade are more comfortable with each other.”

Kerr comments on how EddyCurry can help the Heat this season: “The role that he can fill is withhis ability to guard the big people whether it’s Dwight Howard or(Andrew) Bynum or whoever. This is a position of weakness for the Heat. Theyhave very little front-court depth. He’s got the talent and the size tofill an important role here.”

TNT’sCraig Sager interviewed Heat forward LeBron James following the game

James on how he wanted toimprove his game this season: “I just wanted to come into thisseason as a more complete player. Playing inside, outside, coming off ofpick-and-rolls and shooting and making plays for my teammates which I love todo.”

Game 2:  Dallas Mavericks (94) @ Utah Jazz (91)

Announcers: Kevin Harlan (play-by-play) and Reggie Miller (analyst)with Cheryl Miller (reporter)

Reggie Miller comments onUtah Jazzforward Paul Milsap: “He’s very active and anundersized four-man. He’s such a great and quick leaper and rebounder. That’s what gives him the advantage when he goes against bigger playerslike Dirk Nowitzki.”

Reggie Miller comments onthe Jazz’s youth: “When younger teams lose, theytend to lose focus. That’s why the Jazz coaching staff and veteranplayers don’t let the young guys slip. They let them play through theirmistakes. They do play hard.”

Halftime

Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal and Smith

Barkley comments on theJazz: “(The Jazz) aren’t as good as their record but Ilove what they’re doing with that team. They have a bunch of youngtalent. They have a bright future and they are probably three years away frommaking the playoffs.”

Smith comments on why theJazz have improved this season: “The one thing that makes (the Jazz)better this year is that (head coach) Ty Corbin has committed to the run andthe pressure defense.”

****   ****    ****    ****

Reggie Miller comments on Jazz rookiecenter Enes Canter:“You want this kid to succeed. In the NBA, you have to be quick. He istoo slow in gathering himself. Players are too quick in the defensivezone.”

Reggie Miller comments on theMavericks adjusting to new players on the team: “This is a different team than (lastseason’s) championship team. They are trying to integrate (multiple)new players into a team that won the championship last season. It’s goingto be very difficult on top of an abbreviated training camp and not a lot ofpractice time.”

Smith comments on the Dallas Mavericks lackof chemistry: “Great team but I’m not impressed yet. They still haven’t found their stride. Their chemistry is a little off.Guys are a little reluctant on offense. I don’t think (right now) theyhave an opportunity to win a championship the way they are.”

Barkley comments on Los Angeles Clippers power forward BlakeGriffin:“Right now he is a little overrated. This guy has a chance torevolutionize the power forward position. He has to get betteroffensively.”

Barkley comments on Lakers centerAndrew Bynum:“Andrew Bynum has to prove his offensive skills too. He has gottenbetter, but he is not totally complete yet. Andrew Bynum is a good player;Dwight Howard is a great player.”
